Abbaye de Conques, Conques
Conques Abbey Cloister by Nick in exsilio
Most of the abbey cloisters have disappeared, but some arches are still visible around the courtyard of grass on the south side of the church. In the center of the courtyard is a large pool of serpentine (dark green stone), which has been reconstructed from original parts as part of a renovation of the monastery. It is decorated with small figures.
The gallery on the west side of the court this fascinating romantic capitals, which were commissioned by Abbot Begon III (1087-1107). Topics capitals are the battle of knights and an Annunciation. One of the tents has a special charm and represents workers in the construction site looking at an unfinished tower, carrying their tools in hand.
